A joint statement by ICA, PIDP, the SIRGE Coalition, and WCS was released and formally submitted to the 23rd session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Â
The statement centers on the theme of supporting Indigenous youth and self-determination with a focus on reconceptualizing conservation based on Indigenous values and bringing in a paradigm shift within the conservation sector. In addition to reflecting on self-determination, Indigenous-led, and co-design initiatives, several suggestions are made for inclusion in the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues' own report and recommendations:
1) further practical guidance to UN Member States on Indigenous sovereignty and right to self-determination;
2) bridge Indigenous youth access to traditional lands and cultural teachings;
3) provide protection to environmental human rights defenders;
4) respect Indigenous knowledge and worldviews in market discussions; and
5) energy and digital transitions that ensure a human rights based approach and protect Indigenous Peoples rights.Â
